Avoid the trap of delaying chassis maintenance

The air is becoming crisp, the leaves are turning yellow, red, and orange hues, fall crops are being harvested, and before you know it, Old Man Winter will arrive, bringing all the dreaded winter elements. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can wreak on your chassis, so prepare now and avoid those winter maintenance blues. To ensure a secure and comfortable ride this season, follow these steps:

  1. To appropriately inspect your chassis for wear and tear, first and foremost, remove dirt and grime by simply washing your chassis, so you can observe what elements need to be managed.
  2. Check your paint job, primarily areas that come close to the road. Your paint finish may have developed nicks and cracks from previous exposure to de-icing slushy and salty roads from last year, demonstrating rust, corrosion, and deterioration. If possible, touch up any blemishes with rust-resistant paint.
  3. Driving on crunchy ice can make for a rough ride, so stop any unnecessary jostling by changing your suspension and replacing worn-out parts. Maintain your steering parts and suspension by applying lubricant.
  4. With the time change coming, it means more driving in poorly lighted situations where operating lights are essential. Add fog and snow, and visibility can evolve very limited. Check all wiring and trailer lights for stable connections and wire damage. If your lights seem dim, thoroughly clean them and switch bulbs and fuses as needed.
  5. Most significantly, brake care is necessary. Freezing temperatures can adversely impact hoses and couplings. Ensure your air dryer and reservoir are used appropriately, and check the brakes for cracked drums, bent chambers, or drive rods to ensure nothing is loose or broken.
  6. Lastly, washing the underpart of your chassis throughout the Winter when driving via salt-covered roads is always an excellent concept to prevent corrosion. Doing walk-around area checks can increase your peace of mind for safe winter hauling.
