Summer Heat Tips for Truckers

It’s that time of year, and we can all relate to that searing feeling of the scorching summer sun that will almost make you cry! With Summer in full swing and temperatures soaring, we’ve gathered a list of helpful tips to help you beat the heat and stay safe on the road.

Pay Attention to Warning Signs

Identifying the first signs of these conditions is essential to prevent suffering further injury that could land you in the ER.

  • Heat Exhaustion – Symptoms include heavy sweating, feeling faint,
nausea or vomiting, and muscle cramps
  • Heat Stroke – Symptoms include a fever over 103º, confusion and disorientation, dry skin, and hot and rapid pulse, and is a medical emergency
  • Dehydration – Symptoms include dry mouth, increased thirst, lethargy, and dizziness
  • Prevention is necessary to avoid these dangerous situations that can cause life-threatening injuries.

Water and Fluids

Water is the best way to fight dehydration, but alternative beverages such as fruits and vegetables, natural fruit-infused drinks, and flavored sparkling waters can also help.

Clothing and Skin Care

It’s more complicated for the body to handle body temperature when constricted by heavy, tight-fitting clothing. By selecting the proper clothing, you will not only feel cooler, but you will also be more satisfied with those long hauls.

  • Clothing – Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Cotton is the best fabric option that allows airflow.
  • Shoes – Avoid shoes made of rubber or leather, and go for breathable canvas sneakers.
  • Accessories – Brimmed hats and sunglasses protect you from the sun’s harsh rays.
  • Skin Care – Don’t forget the multiple critical parts of your outfit – your skin! Apply higher SPF sunscreens to avoid getting that “trucker’s arm.”

Eating

Smaller is better. Standing in the heat on a tummy full of rich foods can zap your energy. Eat smaller yet more normal food amounts and include healthy, energy-providing snacks such as salt-free seeds or nuts, dried fruit, sugar-free energy bars, veggie chips, or plain popcorn.
